For more than a decade, the Kenwood TS-590SG has earned a reputation as one of the finest conventional superheterodyne HF transceivers ever produced. With its excellent receiver, intuitive front panel, robust digital mode performance, and classic Kenwood ergonomics, it continues to have a loyal following among amateur radio operators.
But a growing question within the ham radio community is becoming difficult to ignore:
Is the Kenwood TS-590SG discontinued?
What We Know
As of today, Kenwood has not officially announced that the Kenwood TS-590SG has been discontinued. In fact, the radio remains listed on Kenwood’s official website as a current product, and firmware updates, documentation, and support resources continue to be available. Those are verifiable facts. However, product listings tell only part of the story.
A look at several major amateur radio retailers paints a different picture regarding TS-590SG availability.
At Ham Radio Outlet (HRO), the TS-590SG is currently listed as Out of Stock – Delivery Will Be Delayed, with no estimated delivery date. Ham Radio Outlet TS-590SG listing. I contacted HRO and point blank asked if the radio was going away, they informed me they show only two units ordered and a note in their system saying these units may not arrive.
At GigaParts, the Kenwood TS-590SG is also listed as Out of Stock, and NO LONGER AVAILABLE. The listing also references used and open-box radios while new inventory remains unavailable. GigaParts TS-590SG listing
Meanwhile, DX Engineering continues to list the radio but also indicates “Not available”. DX Engineering TS-590SG listing
While temporary shortages certainly occur, seeing multiple major amateur radio retailers simultaneously unable to supply new radios naturally raises questions about the future of the model.
Separating Fact from Speculation
Confirmed Facts
- Kenwood has not officially announced that the TS-590SG has been discontinued.
- The radio remains listed as a current product on Kenwood’s website.
- Multiple large U.S. amateur radio retailers currently report little or no new inventory available.
Reasonable Speculation
The available evidence suggests several possible explanations:
- Production of the Kenwood TS-590SG may have slowed significantly or already ended while existing inventory is being sold.
- Kenwood may simply be manufacturing the radio in very limited production batches.
- Kenwood could eventually introduce a TS-590SG replacement or a new mid-priced HF transceiver, although there has been no official announcement supporting that possibility.
Until Kenwood makes a formal statement, none of these possibilities should be presented as established fact.
Why This Matters
The Kenwood TS-590SG occupies a unique position in today’s HF radio market.
Unlike many modern transceivers that use direct sampling SDR technology, the TS-590SG employs a traditional superheterodyne receiver architecture with roofing filters. Many operators continue to prefer its excellent dynamic range, straightforward front panel controls, and outstanding on-air performance.
Even today, many experienced operators consider the Kenwood TS-590SG one of the best values ever produced in a conventional desktop HF transceiver.
If production has indeed ended, it may become one of the last premium non-SDR desktop radios offered by a major amateur radio manufacturer.
Unofficial HIGGINSREPORT take:
While I cannot say the Kenwood TS-590SG is discontinued, I do believe the available evidence strongly suggests that it may be approaching the end of its production life.
The combination of scarce dealer inventory, increasing difficulty obtaining new radios, and the model’s exceptionally long production run all point in that direction. At the same time, without an official announcement from Kenwood, this remains an informed opinion rather than a confirmed fact. Kenwood has not exactly been very communicative as of the last for years (no PUM intended). As of today, the long anticipated Kenwood Tri-band Mobile TM-D750A release with no updates from Kenwood.
For current TS-590SG owners, there is good news.
The Kenwood TS-590SG remains an outstanding HF transceiver whose receiver performance, transmit audio quality, and operating experience continue to compete extremely well against many newer radios. If production is ending, its reputation—and potentially its value on the used market—may continue to grow for years to come.
